Road Trip: The Grand Canyon and Glen Canyon

This post is the first part of a two month road trip I took around The States. September 2017 I got the family discount, even though I wasn’t exactly family. Ross and I had known each other since we were ten, having moved to Big Bear the same year, and given each other shit for our entire acquaintance…so in a way we were absolutely family. I hadn’t been to the Grand Canyon since I was three and didn’t have the keenest memory of the experience. In fact, I remembered absolutely nothing other than a story mum told about how I nearly gave her a heart attack by climbing up the…

    Australia: Looking Back

On my flight back to California, I spent my time alternating between blogging and watching Star Trek: Discovery. When I attempted to write this post, I realized that I couldn’t, as, to quote one of my favorite shows, I was “emotionally compromised.” I had held it together pretty well, shedding a few tears while making a farewell Facebook post, but when the first boarding call came over the speakers I broke down. The crying didn’t stop until we were in the air and I managed to lose myself in SciFi.  Travel is difficult in countless ways. There are those of us, however, who find the pros outweigh the cons. Australia…

    Finding Happiness

It’s been almost a month since my last post and a part of me wants to apologize to my readers: I’m sure it’s been annoying not hearing from me. However, I’ve been working on not apologizing for everything and to be honest I’m not really sorry to begin with. When you move to a different country or even city; things happen. You find a full-time job, you go to the gym, you meet people you want to spend every waking moment with, get sick, almost get better, get sick again, and life goes on. Before you know it, a month has passed since your last post and you’ve simply been…

    Wilson’s Promontory

The weekend had finally arrived; we had been planning it for over a month and I was eager to get on the road and back out in nature. The last time all four of us had been together was during the Lost City Trek in Colombia. Even back then we had known our paths would cross again in Melbourne, and what better way to celebrate than with a camping trip at Wilson’s Prom? Just a little back story: I met Lucy and Brian on the San Blas sailing trip from Panama to Colombia. Then we decided to do La Ciudad Perdida together, which is where we met Holly, who was…

    Cheated

Time for another Throwback Thursday post. I’m going to try to be more regular about these in the future. This time we are headed back to South America, to Lima, Peru. January 2014 For our final day in Lima we visited the ruins in Miraflores, constructed by the Limas not the Incas. The bricks were stacked on top of each other in what archaeologists call “bookshelf style” and composed of a mixture of mud, sand, crushed shells, and water. The vertically stacked bricks have increased flexibility and endure the impact of earthquakes more effectively than those stacked horizontally. For years the ruins had lain buried below a mound of dirt…

    Bogotá

It took less than three minutes to make friends in Bogotá. I walked into my dorm room and there they were: Paulina and Felicia from Texas. Although I was a bit tired from my flight, I decided to join them for a walk around the Candelaria: the district we were staying in. After a few missed turns and stopping to buy some strange fruit that was like a grape mixed with a lychee, we made it to Bolivar Square. It should be called Pigeon Square. There were literally thousands of birds…thousands. Locals sold corn to tourists, so they could take artsy Instagram photos. I didn’t even have corn and still…
